Top tips on introducing newborns to their older siblings

16

Jul 2013

If you’re awaiting the arrival of your second child, congratulations! Adding to your growing family is an exciting time for both parents and your new baby’s older siblings. However, while you’ll know to expect the sleepless nights and never ending laundry that come with a newborn, what you might not have experienced before is the challenge of introducing your eldest child to their new baby brother or sister.

For as long as your little one has known, they have always been the centre of attention. And so, suddenly being one of two siblings can be a tough lesson. While some sibling rivalry will be inevitable, we’ve put together a few top tips to help your children understand and learn how to share their toys, as well as your time and love, with their new sibling!

Make your eldest feel important
Involving your eldest child in the decisions made before the baby is born will make them feel like they have an important role to play in the family. Ask your eldest children to help you choose the paint colour and decorations for the nursery, as well as help to pick out new toys for your newborn baby.

Make time for your first child
While your new baby will undoubtedly require more attention than their older brothers or sisters, it’s important to make time for the eldest in the family so they don’t feel left out. Activity Packs are a great way to have some one-on-one time together while the baby is asleep.

Give a gift from the newborn to their older sibling
By wrapping a present for your first child and adding it to your hospital bag, you can pretend that the new baby has given them a gift when your eldest comes to see their new brother or sister. Not only will this get your little ones off on the right foot, but it will also keep your eldest entertained while you tend to the new baby.

Time for superdad!
When the baby is born, it may be that mum is too tired to run around after the first child. This is the perfect time for dad to step in and spend some quality time bonding with your eldest. Whether he spends it throwing a ball in the park, making wacky experiments or constructing a marble racer, your first child will be so busy having fun with dad they won’t mind having to share you with a new baby!

We’d love to hear your tips for introducing newborns to their older siblings! Follow @GaltToys on Twitter and use the hashtag #TopTipTuesday with your suggestions!
