5 Ways to Keep Children Entertained on Christmas Day

02

Dec 2016

Excitement for the arrival of Father Christmas has been building for weeks and on Christmas morning it’s not uncommon for little ones to jump out of bed at silly o’clock wanting to open their presents and start the festivities. With so much happening over the course of the day, from friends and relatives coming and going, a big roast dinner, and not to mention the opening of presents, it can be a long day for children, with emotions and excitement running high.

shutterstock_351157967

That’s why the mums and dads at Galt HQ have put their heads together to share their best tips and tricks to keep children entertained (and calm!) on Christmas Day.

  1.  Get children involved in the preparations – Whether it’s decorating the Christmas tree or helping in the kitchen, children love to feel part of the preparations. On the day, keep them busy by giving them a job to do, such as being in charge of writing down who each gift is to and from, for the ‘thank you’ letters later.
  2.  Stick to the rules – Christmas Day is a fun day to spend together as a family, but that doesn’t mean that all your house rules should go out the window (or up the chimney!). Children thrive from having a routine, which when disturbed can quickly lead to tears and tantrums. Stick to your usual routine and make sure everyone knows what the plan is for each stage of the day to maintain the peace.
  3.  Burn off all that extra energy – If they can’t resist the temptation to start chomping on chocolate coins from their stockings or digging into all the delicious festive treats on offer, they’re sure to have bags more energy than usual. There is something very special about putting on your wellies, wrapping up warm and going for a brisk winter walk in the park or local woodland on Christmas Day to work off all that extra energy, and it’s all quality time spent together as a family.
  4.  Start new traditions – Introducing a few new traditions to the day that will spread out the process and keep children entertained are also a great idea. For example, bring in a rule that they can open one present every hour. It will give them time to play with each individual toy and they will also appreciate each item, rather than charging in and opening all their presents in under 30 seconds!
  5.  Finally, Have fun! – The most important part of the day is to enjoy yourselves and have fun. There are hundreds of games, puzzles, activity cases and craft kits available that will keep children entertained for hours on Christmas Day. We’ve picked a few of our favourites, but take a peek around our website for even more inspiration.

Christmas Stocking Fillers for Children

25

Nov 2016

The history of the Christmas stocking dates way back, as for centuries children have been hanging empty stockings or sacks over the fireplace in the hope that Father Christmas will fill them with treats and toys on his way back up the chimney.

shutterstock_331511753

Today, every family has a different tradition when it comes to stockings. Some place them at the end of their bed, others on the mantelpiece. Stockings come in all shapes and sizes, from homemade felt, to knitted creations, and we’re even heard of using a pair of Dad’s old rugby socks! The filling is also a complete surprise, with some filled to the brim with tasty oranges and nuts, while others have chocolate and sweets. Our parents at Galt HQ even have traditions when it comes to when we open them – some are dived into first thing on Christmas morning, while others wait until later in the day.

There is no set rule, but one thing we all have in common is that we love the surprise that comes with opening a full stocking on Christmas Day.

Christmas stocking fillers for children under £5

What’s inside can vary, but the Mums and Dads at Galt have come up with a few great ideas for Christmas stocking fillers for children under £5.

  1. Go nuts! Nuts and fruit are not only a great low cost way to bulk out a stocking, but they’re also healthy snacks for your little ones to munch on while they’re waiting for Christmas dinner. In the 12th century nuns gave stockings full of fruit to those less fortunate, putting an apple in the toe for good health and an orange in the heel because they were rare and expensive at the time!
  2. Boost the element of surprise – change the shape of each item in the stocking using all sorts of household objects. For example, make a pair of socks look like a Christmas cracker by putting them in the cardboard part of a loo roll, wrapping in paper, and tying each of the ends with a ribbon.
  3. Take your time – Delving into a deep stocking full of toys can be somewhat overwhelming for some children, and with quick hands pulling out toys at a rate of knots it can be over in a flash. Why not try making the stocking last longer by letting your children pull out one item every 5 minutes? This will give them the opportunity to really appreciate each item that you’ve lovingly included.
  4. Keep them busy – Christmas Day can be a long day in a house that’s buzzing with excitement. Keeping little minds calm can be tricky, but we’ve found that giving them a game or puzzle to focus on can help focus their minds while the grownups sort out the turkey. Here’s a few of our favourite Stocking Filler ideas for children under £5 that will keep them entertained for a few hours.
