Stained Glass Windows – Did you know?

The art of creating a beautiful stained glass window is centuries old, with the majority of big and most famous colourful glass designs being used in the windows of important buildings, such as churches and cathedrals.

A few facts about stained glass windows, that we thought were pretty interesting.

  • In the Forest of Dean, in Gloucestershire, there’s a Sculpture Trail where children can see a giant stained glass window hidden in amongst the trees in the middle of the woods! It measures a whopping 15 ft high and 10 ft wide and hangs up high with the branches at the top of the trees.
  • The first decorative windows appeared in Christian churches around 400 AD. That’s even older than grandma!
  • One of the UK’s most famous stained glass windows can be found in York Minster. The 15th Century cathedral is one of the greatest in the world, with a gothic masterpiece designed by John Thornton which shows the coming of the apocalypse.
  • York Minster has not one, not two but a whopping 129 stained glass windows – that’s a lot of window cleaning to do!

Have fun making your stained glass windows and don’t forget to share your designs with us on Facebook and Twitter!

Free Paper Plane Template Download

24

Aug 2016

Team GB returned home on a golden-nosed 474 British Airways flight, renamed “victoRIOus”, so we thought it only apt to provide a free paper plane template so you too can create your own Olympic designed plane, to show off how you’d celebrate our athletes coming home in style!

Taken from our Paper Planes kit, this fun download will keep children entertained for hours – simply download the activity sheet for FREE via the link below and follow the step by step guide.Paper Plane

Once downloaded, encourage your children to get creative with stickers, felt tip pens, and even glitter to see if they can design a plane fit for an Olympian. Not only will they have fun making it, it’s fascinating to see how far it can fly.

Free Paper Plane Download

According to the Guinness World Records, 27.6 seconds is the record for keeping a paper plane in the air – set by Ken Blackburn on 8 October 1998 – this record has yet to be beaten.  Blackburn used the ‘glider’ to set the record and this ‘King of the Paper Plane World’ is naturally included in our paper plane kit.

So…we have decided to set our own challenge.  How far can you fly your paper plane?

If you or your child decides to take up the challenge, we’d love to see the end results – please upload your pictures or videos to our Facebook or Twitter page.

Chocks away!!

Six Benefits of Colouring

  1. Whether they stay in the lines or not, colouring nurtures creativity and stimulates children to brainstorm and to think of new ideas on their own naturally.
  2. Most Children love to colour, and as well as being a fun activity it helps their cognitive and psychological development.
  3. Improves fine motor skill development, the actions and motions involved aid the development of muscles in their fingers, hands and wrist helping them to write more skilfully as well as operate small objects.
  4. It is a great way for children to express themselves, and you can learn a lot about the way a child is feeling by the images that they draw and the colours they use!
  5. It can be very therapeutic. A child who wants to vent their day’s frustration may scribble outside the lines or colour their best picture ever, but whatever they do, it’s a great way to de-stress.
  6. Milestone, for many children colouring in the lines is just as important as counting to 10! It’s a milestone that says ‘Yes I can!’ –  providing them with a sense of self-worth.

These benefits reinforce the importance of colouring in, and we have a fantastic range of colouring books to keep them going (click here), featuring dot-to-dot images, Magic Painting Books (brush water across them to make colours appear), Magic Pictures (hidden pictures to rub with a coin and then colour in with crayons or felt pens), and much more! Something for everyone, to keep little hands and minds entertained.
